We hope this letter finds you well. It is hard to believe that we have been in Japan for over a month now. As some of you may or may not know, shortly after we sent out the December prayer letter, Chad received word that his visa was approved. We bought tickets and left for Japan on January 26th.
The months of December and January went by like a flash. The holidays were spent saying goodbye to Chad’s family. We spent the month of January packing, selling and giving away our stuff and saying our goodbyes to friends in Dayton.
On January 23rd we had a commissioning service at our home/sending church, Patterson Park Church. The service reminded us of God’s solemn charge and calling given to us to faithfully labor for the furtherance of the gospel in the country of Japan for His glory. The service also brought about within us a renewed dedication and fear for its fulfillment.
We arrived in Tokyo January 27th and spent a week at the TEAM Japan office in orientation. Then we moved to a different city where Chad started his language study. Despite the challenge, his language teacher has been very much encouraged by his progress so far. Please continue to pray for his continued diligent study and for wisdom for the teacher so that it will greatly benefit for Chad’s future ministry in Japan.
Noriko was able to attend a women’s retreat. It was a great opportunity for her to meet many of the other TEAM Japan missionary ladies and a tremendous encouragement for her to hear many of their testimonies which brought her to a deeper understanding of God’s faithfulness in our lives. A week later Noriko and the kids spent a week with her family while Chad stayed at home and focused on his study. Noriko’s family had not seen Yuki for almost three years and had never met Yoshiki, so our presence has meant so much to them.
By the time you receive this letter we will be moving to our permanent location in Tokyo and busy trying to establish our lives in our new home. We are very excited to see Chad finally starting his ministry work in the TEAM office. We will also start visiting churches in the area, prayerfully seeking to know which church the Lord is leading us to be a part of for support and encouragement. Yuki will start the first grade at a Japanese public school at the beginning of April.
This time of adjustment and transition has not been easy, yet the Lord has been faithful to give us sufficient grace to carry us through each day. We appreciate and thank you very much for coming alongside us with continued faithful prayers, encouragement and support.
Even with our new/reduced budget we are still in need of about $650 a month to bring it to 100%. Please pray for our continued utter dependence upon the Lord’s provision of the remaining support and upon His enablement to live in any and every financial circumstance (Philippians 4:11-13).
We were in Tokyo during the recent earthquake dropping some stuff off at our new house. It was Yuki’s first earthquake experience so she was very scared. We are all safe as well, as is Noriko’s family, who lives north of the epicenter.
As we seek on our knees God’s eternal perspective and purpose for this recent devastating earthquake in Japan, Jesus’ words to His disciples have been brought to our minds: “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work. Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest’? Behold I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest.” John 4:34-35 We thank our Lord and all of our faithful supporters for allowing us to be here at such a time as this to be an instrument of His eternal work of salvation in the lives of Japanese people. Please continue to labor with us through prayers that God will cause their hearts to become ever more open and ready to receive the gospel of Jesus Christ to gain His eternal life through this devastating loss. Our hearts are heavy with sorrow, yet at the same time hopeful to see how our sovereign God will unveil His eternal purpose for the days to come.
- Please pray for Chad’s continued diligent study in Japanese language and for wisdom for the teacher so that it will greatly benefit for Chad’s future ministry in Japan.
- Please pray for our continued adjustment in life and ministry in Tokyo.
- As we start visiting churches in Tokyo area, please pray for the Lord’s clear direction on which church He is leading us to be a part of for support and encouragement.
- Please pray for our continued utter dependence upon the Lord’s provision of the remaining support and upon His enablement to live in any and every financial circumstance.
- Please pray that God will cause the hearts of Japanese people to become ever more open and ready to receive the gospel of Jesus Christ through this recent devastating earthquake.
